When my daughter was born, she received a few pieces of jewelry to mark her arrival. One of them is the ‘Hello Kitty’ necklace below made of gold. She has put it on a few times but I normally request her to take it off and put it away safely as I do not want her to damage it. She does wear it on special occasions to complement her dress.

In Malaysia, it is common practice for Chinese grandparents to give jewelry to their new grandchildren.

It is a common trend nowadays to see young girls put on jewelry starting from an early age. I have seen two year olds wearing earring studs as well as necklaces. Also common are bangles or bracelets especially charm bracelets.
Teenage girls are especially captivated by the myriad of jewelry pieces available and it is not surprising to see them wearing several pieces at once. They wear jewelry as accessories to enhance their appearance or to make a fashion statement or to show their individuality.
Of course in keeping up with the demand, producers of designer jewelry have been busy coming up with novelty designs. Choosing to buy jewelry is an easy choice but deciding which specific piece to buy is the hardest part. I have been faced with this familiar situation myself a few times and I normally opt for a simple cross design to be safe.
Jewelry is made more attractive by the addition of colorful gemstones or in combination with pearls. Also favorites are those of popular characters like ‘Mickey Mouse’ or ‘Hello Kitty’ which my daughter received for herself.
