If there is one thing my children complaint about each day after school is the homework they have to complete at home. It has also become my routine to ask them every day without fail, what homework do they have each day.
My children perceive the homework as a burden and it is no fun to do schoolwork at home. As a parent, I strive to be supportive and make homework to be a positive experience everyday. Below are some tips on how to achieve this goal.
1. Do your work at the same time your child is doing his homework. You can write your e-mails or settle your bills while he is doing homework in the same room. If he needs your help, you will be on-hand to assist him.
2. Share the responsibility of supervising your kid’s schoolwork with your spouse. I help my kids with English, Science and Math whereas my partner takes on Chinese and other subjects. Sharing the responsibility helps to lighten the load.
3. Encourage your child to think through a problem first before helping him. Sometimes all it takes is a simple comment for him to be able to figure out the answers correctly.
Ideally, you are guiding him on how to approach a problem or to find the possible ways to get the answer to a question. If your child is completely stumped, then you can teach him how to get the answer correctly. This prevents your child from getting frustrated and hating the subject.
4. There will be frustrating moments when you get tired of each other and you start to loose your patience. Prevent undesirable incidences by asking your partner to take over supervising your child. Your child will know he has on-going support whenever he needs it.
So, there you have it. Schoolwork or homework does not have to be a chore or a hassle for your child anymore.
