A Day in My Life as a Parent

by jacquelyn on February 27, 2009

I have so far written quite a number of “How to” articles to give you good tips and information. Every parent’s experience is different as every household is not the same. However, we may still be able to identify with each other in a lot of ways like wanting to provide a good growing up environment for our children.

As we go through the daily grind, our only consolation is that we are doing it for the good of our children. Well, this is a good enough reason that keeps me going. Below, I wish to share a typical day in my life when I am at home, normally weekends as I work during the weekdays. On a weekday, I am normally out by 6:30am and back at home at 6:30pm in the evening.

I have to mention that I have a housekeeper or housemaid to help me out with all the housework and child-minding. I also have my mom who lives with me and who dotes on her grandchildren. I am very lucky to have someone to help me out with the housework and this is not an uncommon thing in Malaysia or even Singapore.

Below is a typical Sunday for me:

6:30 am – 7:30 am
My family’s normal waking up time is around 7 on Sundays. On weekends and public holidays, we get to wake up a bit late compared to weekdays which is 5:30 am. We are supposed to go to church on Sundays but we have been missing a few lately.

7:30 am – 8:30 am
The whole family goes out to buy breakfast and also locally grown vegetables and seasonal fruits. Our typical breakfast would be fried noodles or local food or ‘kuih-muih’ like banana fritters, fried spring rolls, steamed buns or cakes, pancakes, etc. Everything is very yummy. As you can see from the pictures below, it looks like a very busy market.

8:30 am – 9:30 am
My two older sons are off to Sunday school for an hour of class. My eldest son already had his first Holy Communion last year. At home, I get to spend some time with my daughter alone.

10:30 am – 12:00 noon
We are off to the supermarket to get other things to replenish the kitchen. Normally, I will need to get coffee powder, milk powder, chicken and beef, biscuits, dairy products, rice, dried noodles, tomato ketchup, etc.

12:30 pm – 1:30 pm
Lunch is eaten at home. When I go out to buy breakfast, I would buy lots of extras to cover lunch as well. It saves time on lunch preparation and the rest of the family prefers the ‘non-routine’ food.

2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Around this time,I will prepare the things needed for dinner. The kids are off doing their school work which requires on and off parental supervision.

4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
After homework is done, the kids and their dad go out to play some games or if dad is washing the car, it turns out to be a water game. I get to prepare dinner around this time and feed my daughter her dinner first.

6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Everyone eats dinner.

7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
It is reading or TV time. I prefer to read of course especially to get ideas for my blog. Others prefer to watch TV.

9:00 pm
It is bedtime for everyone especially the kids. I will continue to work on my blog but usually turn in by 11 pm.

There you have it, my typical Sunday with my family.

Do you do anything special on Sundays with your family? If you have an interesting story to tell, please share it here.

Normally, we will stay at home on Sunday because my son have to avoid crowded places due to his neutropedia condition. We will probably visit some friends or relatives in the afternoon.

Hi KC, sorry to hear that your son has neutropenia. For other readers information, neutropenia is a condition of an abnormally low count of a certain type of white blood cell called neutrophil. White blood cells play an important role by fighting off infection.
